Haas boss Gunther Steiner said the team initially considered bringing in Daniel Ricciardo. However, this happened even before it became known about the signing of a contract with McLaren Oscar Piastri.


Earlier it was reported that Ricciardo himself decided not to play in Formula 1 for the team from the basement of the peloton and chose to spend the 2023 season outside of racing, with an eye to returning as early as 2024.


Ricciardo is highly likely to return to Red Bull as reserve driver next season:


I spoke with Riccardo at the very beginning. Even before it became known about his departure from McLaren, I contacted him to understand what Daniel was going to do next year. But then we didn`t get anywhere. Why? I don`t know, you`d better ask him yourself.


Steiner joked that Ricciardo isn`t very popular in Haas these days anyway - after knocking Kevin Magnussen out of the race in Brazil:


He didn`t talk to me. And he hasn`t spoken to me until now - and after he knocked us out last weekend, he better not come up. So I won`t answer his calls anymore (laughs).
